BITCH CRITIQUE - Bart Scheerens (Boxing Helenas)
Back home after a short but very interesting trip to the UK. Judging bitches at National Whippet Association, Monday 5th May 2025. I was honoured to judge so many beautiful bitches in some very strong classes.
So thank you very much for the committee to invite me and put their trust in me. Thank you of course to all the exhibitors who entered their beloved whippets and for the appreciation of my opinion.
My overall opinion was one of well made whippets in all classes, smooth outlines and beautiful types. Still some straight fronts what is a minor point in our breed for as long as I know.
A thing what seems to be a new trend for some, is to stand in front of their dogs when they are on the table, what makes it very hard for me to judge the head of their dogs. When judging I want to have the head of the dog resting in my both hands, to check if the head is chiselled enough, see/feel the cheeks, see the width between the eyes, and see the expression. How is this possible if the handler stands in front of their dog ? It is very disturbing. A whippet is a breed with no exaggerations, please don’t exaggerate in their showing either.
I was so happy to see how all is going so easily, quietly, on time, good organised and well behaved by the exhibitors. But that’s typical with our breed all over the world, aren’t we the lucky ones!
Baby Puppy Bitch
1ST 189 – Cobyco Capture the Moment ( L Yacoby Wright )
Very promising well shaped puppy of good size, with good body substance and shapely outline. Better developed chest for the moment than second, who seemed to be her sister. Strong head with enough underjaw. Would prefer a bit darker eye. Flowing topline with well laid croupe. Balanced angulations with good return of upper arm in front and well bend of stifle in rear giving her great reach and drive when moving.
2ND 1 – Cobyco Capture Your Heart ( E Allisstone )
Another very promising puppy, with the same virtues as her sister who took the first place. Very feminine but will need a bit more time to develop. Love her elegance and flowing smooth outline. Easy mover but could have a bit more drive when going around.
Veteran Bitch (7-10)
1ST 104 - Ch.Crosscop Let It Shine For Supeta Jw Osw ( F Mycroft )
High quality bitch of superb breed type with a pleasing outline. Wonderful head and soft expression. Well placed neck into well laid shoulders and enough return of upper arm and good spring of pasterns. Very smooth top and underline, well laid croupe. Wonderful proud mover from all sides. It was a close decision between her and second, but this girl showed herself so well, and has a bit of extra to convince me to give her first place.
2ND 97 - Ch.Crosscop Glittering Prize ( S, L, G, Mitchell, Waddell, Morris )
Very much of the same quality as the first one, of beautiful breed type. Super smooth outline. Feminine head with typical expression. Elegant neck into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm into flowing topline with well laid croupe. Moderate angulations fore and aft. Moved with good reach and drive and showed herself to her
best. It was such a hard decision between her and the first one.
Veteran Bitch (10 +)
1ST 70 - Ringmore Day Lily ( V Leathart )
What a lovely veteran shown in such good condition. Classic type of good size and very elegant allover. Such a smooth outline. Very elegant and feminine head. A little bit weak in pastern and feet. Moderate angulations in front and rear. Well laid croupe with well placed tail . Still going around with style.
2ND 160 - Shirotae Gin Sing Vw ( A Vaughan Wall )
Very strong powerful female with sweet temperament. On the bigger size. Strong but still feminine head, low placed ears, strong well placed neck, smooth topline and underline. Good body substance with well spring of rib and good length of loin. Moved freely.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1ST 147 - Bowdania Elphaba ( M Thomas )
Attracting strong but elegant female with beautiful outline. Elegant head with super pigment, strong underjaw, well filled muzzle and flat skull. Showing her third eyelid gives her another expression as I prefer. She is still in a developing stage and makes it hard to judge her. Everytime I looked at her, she was standing differently ,
sometimes too long, sometimes shorter giving me every time a different impression of her. With her body at the limit of length she certainly needs time. In her movement I had the same feeling, the longer she moved, the better she did . In the end my decision to make her first in this class was based on her overall quality.
2ND 84 - Edenwhip A Moment In Thyme ( L Mallinson )
Very elegant and feminine, but could have a bit more body substance all over. Lovely elegant head with well placed eye and typical expression, but could have more underjaw. High placed neck into a very smooth and curvy topline and well laid croupe. This girl needs time to develop, especially in chest and chest fill. She excelled in
movement, with low to the ground front movement and good drive. Unfortunately she was a bit insecure on the day and I hope they can work on her temperament to improve this . I did appreciate that the handler stayed very calm and tried to show her to her best.
Puppy Bitch
1ST 100 – Crosscop Temptation To Supeta ( L, D, G, F Wadell, Spademan, Mycroft )
Very smart quality girl with a super outline, fantastic head with well placed eyes and dark pigment what gives her a wonderful expression. Well placed and carried small ears. Long well placed neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Smooth topline and well laid croupe. Deep enough chest, well spring of rib, perfect
underline. Stands higher on legs as second. Very confident mover with good reach and drive.
2ND 56 - Tervanty Dragon Song At Palmik ( M, Y, Howgate, Hull )
Another very smart quality girl, also with this great outline and beautiful type, making it so hard to decide between her and the first . Wonderful head and expression, with well placed and carried small ears .Well developed chest and chest fill. Smooth topline and matching tuck up. Balanced angulations. Easy long and low ground covering stride.
Junior Bitch
1ST 182 – Ardencote Justa Dream ( J Wood )
Very pleasing type with correct body proportions and smooth flowing outline. Strong head with well filled muzzle and flat skull, correct eyes with soft expression. Strong well set neck, into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm, correct feet and spring of pasterns. Lovely smooth topline with well laid croupe. Moderate angulations in rear. Moved with good reach and drive, and her handler got the best out of her.
2ND 20 – Ardencote Dance A Dream At Chipperlake ( M Timberlake )
The more classic sister of the first, with very nice outline, flowing from tip of nose to tail. Feminine head with soft expression, well placed ears, long well placed neck into well laid shoulders and curvy topline. Balanced angulations. Deep well filled chest, correct underline. Moved with good reach and drive, but lost this class to her sister as she was more confident in her movement.
Yearling Bitch
1ST 138 – Ch.Collooney Celeste ( Y, D Short )
Super type plus quality, combines power and elegance. Feminine head with well filled muzzle, strong underjaw , well placed eyes and ears. Long and strong well placed neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upper arm. Well made front with forechest, good depth and spring of rib, plenty of heart room. Good feet and pastern.
Balanced topline and good length of loin. Strong hindquarters. Easy long and low ground covering stride.
2ND 20 – Ardencote Dance A Dream At Chipperlake ( M Timberlake )
2nd in junior bitch.
Novice Bitch
1ST 109 – Nevedith Hi Jinks ( E Newton )
Outstanding type plus quality with pleasing virtues, shapely outline and the right curves. Very feminine elegant head with typical expression, even with a look that says, I’m here, look at me, I’m a queen and if you don’t like me I don’t care. Balanced all over without any exaggeration. Lovely long elegant well placed neck into smooth
topline and matching tuck up. Well made front with good depth of chest and excellent chestfill for her age. Typical low tot he ground daisy cutting movement. She was an easy winner as she just took my breath away standing and moving.
2ND 56 - Tervanty Dragon Song At Palmik ( M, Y, Howgate, Hull )
2nd in puppy bitch
Graduate Bitch
1ST 187 – Zobyco Cobyco Paranoia ( L Yacoby Wright )
Very smart girl of pleasing type and correct size. Feminine head with the right proportions but could have a bit more underjaw. Strong elegant well placed neck into smooth topline with good length of loin and well laid croupe. Moderate angulations in front and rear, with well muscled thighs . Correct feet and pastern. Long and low
ground covering stride.
2ND 148 Pagarni’s Princess Elsa ( C Tristram )
Beautiful classical female who made it very hard for me to make a decision, and was very close to win this class. She has a supersmooth curvy outline. Feminine head, well placed neck, smooth topline and croupe, matching tuck up. Well made front and well angulated in rear. I prefer a lower to the ground front movement and a bit more drive, which she needed to beat the first.
Special Beginners Bitch
1ST 119 – Whippiness Tornado Takeoff ( T Robinson )
Very classic girl with shapely outline. Very balanced all over. Feminine head with sweet expression and well placed and carried small ears. Very smooth outline. Deep chest. Correct bone, feet and pastern. Easy mover. She was shown to her best.
2ND 139 – Whitesquall Mionetto ( K Skinner )
Smart girl with pleasing virtues. Strong head that could be a bit more refined. Well placed neck, smooth curvy topline. Well bend of stifle. Covers enough ground when standing. Could have a bit more drive in her movement when going around. Well presented .
Post Graduate Bitch
1ST 78 – Nevedith Gold Peach Of Jevobhn ( J Lowe )
Feminine and elegant girl with pleasing virtues and shapely outline. Beautiful type and size. Lovely head with sweet expression but could have a darker eye. Strong muzzle and flat skull, well placed neck, smooth topline, well laid croupe. Balanced angulations. Deep chest, typical tuck up. Strong hindquarters. Moved with good reach and drive.
2ND 18 – Bunehug So Be It ( S E Bunney )
Stronger girl as first of beautiful type and correct body proportions. Feminine head with typical expression. Well made front with deep chest and good chestfill. Smooth topline and well laid croupe. Balanced angulations. Beautiful profile movement.
Mid Limit Bitch
1ST 54 – Palmik Truth About Love Jw ( M Y Howgate Hull )
High quality female of superb breed type. Wonderful head and expression. Strong body with deep and well filled chest, well spring of rib and good length in loin. Lovely smooth curvy topline. Correct feet and pastern. Strong thigh and well developed second thigh.
Typical low to the ground daisy cutting movement whilst keeping her topline.
2ND 144 – Crosscop California Barbie From Supeta Jw (F Mycroft )
Another high quality female of great breed type, but still looking very young and much lighter in body than my winner of this class. Maybe the perfect body & body substance is somewhere between these two. But this has nothing to do with the quality of both. This girl has an extremely elegant head with great expression. Well placed neck into smooth and long flowing topline with matching tuck up. Balanced moderate angulations fore and aft. Very sound mover from all sides.
Limit Bitch
1ST 175 – Shalfleet Easter Sonnet Jw ( K Wilton-Clark )
Very attractive quality female with good body substance and proportions plus elegance. Lovely feminine head with well filled muzzle, strong underjaw and flat skull. Dark well placed and well shaped eyes with typical expression. Long and strong neck into well laid shoulders but could have a bit more return of upper arm and flexibility in pastern. Correct top- and underline, well placed croupe . Strong hindquarters with well bend of stifle. The best mover of this class.
2ND 128 – Crosscop A Dream Come True For Dalerafenn ( L, J Salkeld, Graham )
Very smart girl of superb breed type, completely “my cup of tea “ with a lovely smooth shapely outline . In total she could have been a bit more balanced, both standing and moving. The most beautiful head and expression, with well placed eyes, ears, neck. Correct top- and underline, well laid croupe and low hocks.
Open Bitch
1ST 76 – Una Donna Che Conta ( G Ligouri )
High quality bitch of superb breed type, with the most flowing and smooth outline that I appreciate so much in our breed. She is a real eyecatcher standing and moving. All this is a moderate way ( also her handling ) without any exaggeration except of her charisma. When you lay your hands on her, you just feel she is quality all over, your hands flow over her soft coated well constructed athletic body . There is quality and there is quality with that little extra spark, that special thing what I just can’t explain, and some dogs have this. Well this bitch has it !! Hard to ignore, and so I couldn’t ignore her and her outstanding performance, making her easily my CC winner of the day .
2ND 99 – Crosscop Just What I need ( L, D, G,F, S Morris Waddel Mycroft Mitchell )
Such a quality girl of pleasing type with super smooth outline and length. Beautiful head with lovely sweet expression, well placed neck, smooth topline with matching tuck up. Easy move rand well presented. Absolutely love this girl.
Special Racing & Lure Coursing Bitch
1ST 11 – Zoraden Fifty Shades Darker Jw ( D Bowsher )
Lovely bitch that impressed me by her typical outline again and again, everytime I watched her, on the table or on the ground. When one would ask me to draw a silhouette of a whippet with only some lines, well her outline would be my example. The right curves at the right place. That was what I was thinking when judging her, a
great thought isn’t it ? She was also of good size and shown in great condition. Lovely head but prefered here a bit more elegance, refinement. Flowing outline from the tip of her nose tot he tip of her tail, thanks to her well placed neck and well laid croupe. Balanced angulations, well filled chest and good chest fill with just enough
forechest. Matching tuck up, enough length in loin and a well angulated rear with strong thigh and second thigh. Easy mover that could have a fraction more reach and drive to stand out of the rest in the final decisions for the CC, but in this class she was my easy winner and finally an easy BIS racing/coursing winner.
2ND 119 – Whippiness Tornado Takeoff ( T Robinson )

2nd Smith’s Derronpark Rafferty at Stonefox
Upstanding male. More refined than 1. Good shaped head, strong underjaw. Balanced shoulders and return of upper arm. Good depth, well ribbed back. Hocks well let down. Slightly taller than 1. Moved with reach in front. Well done on a great BSBIS.

2nd Graham’s Ohoka Tip Top
Well conditioned male with clean lines. Taller than 1 and a little more feminine in outlook. Well laid shoulders however I would prefer more of a return of upper arm and depth. Well ribbed back with slight tuck up which means he didn’t have the curve of outline of 1. Would prefer more spring in pastern. Hocks well let down. Moved confidently but did lift slightly in front.
Graduate Dog
1st Russell’s Longmire The Lark Ascending at Arunja
Just an honest dog. Correct head proportion’s with more stop than 2 and tighter, finer ear. Strong neck into well laid shoulders. Elbows well tucked in. Good depth of chest and fill. A little steep in pastern for me. Great spring of rib, well ribbed back. Strong loin with rise. Powerful hind quarters with hocks well let down. Moved well.

2nd Blackburn’s Mazargo Whole Lotta Trouble
Heavier in type than 1 which didn’t have the finesse. Correct head proportions, would prefer a more classic expression and tighter ear. Good length of neck, needs to fill in front as he's turning his feet at this stage. Good spring in pastern, well ribbed back with spring. Slight rise over the loin. Hocks well let down. Moved with power which was effortless in profile.
Post Graduate Dog
1st Tristram’s Supetas Just Do It
3 year old male of a great shape with no exaggerations. Correct head shape with tight ear. Good underjaw. Elegant neck into well laid shoulder and balanced return of upper arm. Correct shaped bone. Good depth with spring going back into a developed loin. Correct croup. Hocks well lets down. In great condition without any heaviness or coarseness. Moved soundly coming and going, and in profile. Strongly considered for the RCC.
2nd Middleton & Gilhooly’s Stormida the Brave
Very pleasing type. Classic head and expression. Similar in type and size to 1 just not quite the depth of body and scope. Well ribbed back with a strong loin for his stature. Good turn of stifle and hocks well let down. Moved freely just not quite the width behind that 1 had.
Mid Limit Dog
1st Higginbottom’s Ranveli Royal Duke Of Dawnsafon JW
Strong, ultra masculine dog. Correct head shape, strong underjaw. Clean neck into well laid shoulders and return of upper arm. Good spring in pastern, well ribbed back. Would like him to flow in body shape a little more and up over his croup. Hocks well let down. Moved with good width coming and going.
2nd Bingham’s Wrenella Steel
Loved his type and size. Pleasing head and expression. Preferred the length of neck and cleanness over the shoulders of 1 but this was a very close call. Correct shaped bone and feet. Good depth, well ribbed back. Compact body. Hocks well let down, would like a more developed second thigh. Moved very soundly.
Limit Dog
1st Mould’s Crosscop Waterloo Sunset
The best of heads and expression. For type he is on point. Great for size and shape and overall balance. Strong neck into well laid shoulders with return of upper arm. Good spring in pastern. Depth of brisket with a defined tuck up. Rise over the loin. Unexaggerated rear angulation. Moved soundly. Only losing out on the RCC as he was a little too hard in condition where he lacked a bit of covering over his ribs, this condition also made him not
move in profile quite as freely as I wanted today nevertheless his day will come.
2nd Turnbull’s Ticks The Boxes for Turnstone
Upstanding male with elegance and finesse. Unfortunate to come up against 1 today. Correct shaped head, flat skull on top. Fine, tight ear. Clean neck. Deep chest, spring of rib, not quite the tuck up of 1. Well ribbed back with rise over loin. Preferred his croup and tail set to 1. Hocks well let down. Standing over plenty of ground, although slightly taller than 1, still in proportion. Moved with reach and drive. Lovely dog.

1st Yacoby Wright’s Ch Cobyco Catch Your Eye
Going over him on the table he depicts refined masculinity without coarseness. Correct shaped head with a pleasing expression and eye. Strong neck into the best shoulders and return of upper arm I could find. Correct shaped bone down into pasterns with plenty of spring. Deep, well filled chest. Well sprung ribs that were covered properly. Correct length of loin with rise. Powerful hindquarters, well developed second thigh down into well let
down hocks. He had plenty of muscle for me however it is the correct shape. He moved straight coming and going with plenty of width. Reaching and driving in profile. CC.
2nd Winkley-Balmer & Poole’s Ch Edenwhip Can I Be Him
Similar type to 1 not quite as masculine. More feminine in head although correctly shaped. Strong neck into well placed shoulders, not quite the return of upper arm of 1. Correct shaped bone that was clean to go over. Brisket is deep, well ribbed back with spring but didn’t quite have the underline of 1. Strong thigh into well let down hocks. Standing over plenty of ground, a more rangier dog. Moved with drive, would like him to have a slightly
lower reach. Nevertheless a lovely type of dog and I'm sure will further prove his worth away from the ring as a stud dog. RCC.

Striking, upstanding male. Classy head and expression. Clean neck into well laid shoulders. Good spring in pastern, needs time to drop in front. Well ribbed back, strong loin. Hocks well let down. Compact and masculine without being heavy. Preferred the head and expression of this boy. Well laid shoulders with balanced return of upper arm. Steeper in croup and not the hind angulation of 1 so doesn’t stand over as much ground however a lot to like. Once settled into himself, moved well.
