NWA Championship Show

DOG CRITIQUE
It was an honour & pleasure to judge the dog classes at this show, & what a lovely entry the exhibitors gave me – thank you. I had a super class of 16 MPD which made me think that the future of the breed is in good hands. Another particularly large class was Limit with 22 dogs present. A difficult class to judge with considerable variation in type & quality, plus some dogs which I had admired from the ringside on previous occasions just not giving of their best. However, on the whole I was very happy with all placed dogs & particularly with the four main winners. I have made little reference to bone, fronts (as viewed from the front) or toplines as they were generally correct. My co-judge, Mr Frank Kane, & I had a difference of opinion when it came to deciding on BIS. For me the bitch has a little more angulation & length in the hind leg than I would look for & with a little more maturity will look even better overall than she does now. However, as she is a lovely, eyecatching bitch with great ring presence I did not feel that our differing opinions warranted the involvement of the referee & agreed that the bitch should take the top spot.
VETERAN (7) 1 Russell’s Ch Willingwisp Star Trooper, well known winner of numerous CCs. Lovely size, quality & type, the hand flows over him from neck to tail. Totally balanced, excellent coat & skin & correct free movement. I last judged him four years ago when I would have loved to award him the CC but alas he was carrying a little too much weight that day. At 7½ years he was still in the running for top honours today & I was delighted that he was awarded BVIS; 2 Martin’s Ch Collooney Mochacchino, almost 8 years. Not a glamorous dog, but one I have always liked. In good, hard condition. Well balanced, flowing topline, not overdone in any way & comes into his own with his free, ground covering movement; 3 Holland’s Ch Elmanash Major General.
MINOR PUPPY (17,1a) 1 Russell’s Glantam Going My Way, 7 months f/w. Super quality & size. Elegant but masculine head & neck, well balanced throughout with correct shoulder & hind angulation producing flowing movement. Exceptionally steady on the move for such a baby, which won him this class. BPD; 2 Head’s Demerlay Hitting It Hard, a little stronger in type but certainly not oversized. A promising puppy with attractive head, strong but elegant neck, well balanced throughout, correct angulation. Movement very sound & flowing with the promise of good drive, but not quite as settled as the winner; 3 Dillon’s Lorbri Billy No Mates.
PUPPY (9) 1 Whitaker-Crosby’s Mulcair May Contain Nutz, f/br of lovely size & type. Pleasing head & neck, deep brisket & well ribbed. Very good muscletone. Sound mover. Thought that he would be my best puppy but sadly he just did not perform well in a later class & was beaten by 2nd in MPD; 2 Neale’s Stormalong Romantic Romeo, f/br/w trim. Similar in type to the winner. Liked his head & depth of brisket. Moved soundly, just not the maturity & muscletone of 1; 3 Severn’s Nattah Silver Lining.
JUNIOR (11,3) 1 Howgate & Hull’s Palmik Live To Tell, pale f/w trim. As a puppy I felt that his pale colour could make him seem less masculine than one would like. Having judged him I can tell you that this is only an illusion. He has a good, masculine, quality head, neck flows into shoulders & shoulders flow into correct topline. Deep brisket & ribbing extending well back. Well balanced angulation & good depth through the thigh & second thigh – all working to give him his smooth, powerful movement. Lovely size & maturing well. RCC; 2 Nunneley’s Veredon Vanilla Sunset, fawn with masculine head, good balance, well ribbed & excellent thighs A little unsettled on the table, but came into his own with his very sound movement. Super overall type. Did not realize when judging him that he was sired by my CC winner – no wonder I liked him! 3 Anderson’s Becscott Oxford Pioneer.
YEARLING (17,2) 1 Allen’s Zoraden Vanilla Latte, r/f of lovely size. Masculine without any coarseness. Good layback of shoulder & return of upper arm, exceptionally smooth over the shoulders. Deep brisket & pleasing topline. Perfect balance & so very sound. Pressed hard for RCC – difficult decision; 2 Keenan, Smith & Mixides’ Railfield Rainicon in Yialousa, pale fawn. A little taller but still well balanced & full of quality. Good head, very deep brisket, strong loin & hindquarters giving him his powerful movement. A dog I have admired from the ringside & he did not disappoint. Close decision; 3 Davies & Gilmour’s Marimay Moses.
NOVICE (17) 1 D Hitting It Hard, movement more settled in this class making him a clear winner here. One to watch; 2 B Oxford Pioneer, 3rd in JD, light f/br. Deep brisket, well proportioned & balanced. Lovely head & expression. Good shoulders & strong thighs, particularly good second thighs. His flowing movement won him his place here; 3 Hall’s Blandings Fortune Cookie.
UNDERGRADUATE (6,1) 1 Rishworth’s Collooney Taylor Made, attractive lightly brindled fawn. Elegant but still masculine with good dog head & well pigmented. Like his overall make & shape. Flowing topline, well balanced with deep brisket & good thighs. The best mover in the class with true & flowing profile action; 2 Harding-Waite & Waite’s Drakesoak Allofa Twist with Caderleth, dark br/w. Stronger type but certainly not coarse. Good masculine head. Good length with ribbing extending well back, well muscled with good depth through thighs. Movement flowing & true; 3 Baxter’s Blandings Indian Summer of Hernevalley.
SPECIAL BEGINNERS (6) 1 Cutter & Lubin’s Wayhead Cellini for Chosovi, pale cream fawn/dark mask. Pleasing head with good expression & pigment. Nice size & balance. Deep brisket. Good depth through the thighs. Moved soundly & freely; 2 Kirtland’s Palmik Starlight Raider, golden fawn, taller type but full of quality with lovely pigment. Deep brisket, strong loin & well developed thighs. Moved well. Close decision with 1; 3 de Lacey Munday’s Whipowil Sea Lord.
POST GRADUATE (18,3) 1 Andrews’ Citycroft One Small Step for Sharmus, pale fawn of super quality with good head & expression. Deep brisket, strong loin & good thigh & second thigh. Correct angulation & the smoothest of shoulders gave him his lovely flowing & true movement which won him this strong class; 2 Allen’s Zoraden Gingerbread Latte, super sound & lovely to ‘go over’. In gleaming jacket. Well balanced & very sound in all directions. Just not the scope of the winner; 3 Dillon’s Danluke Diamond In The Ruff.
MID LIMIT (12) 1 Clarkson’s Demerlay Rags To Riches, silver br/w. As a pup & junior this dog was big when compared to most of his class mates. He is certainly not a small dog but now rising 3 years he has some quality about him, is certainly not coarse, & did not look out of place in this class. He is so well balanced with a deep brisket, good ribbing & well developed thighs all playing a part in his super sound & flowing movement; 2 Keenan, Smith & Mixides’ Citycroft Star Gazing over Yialousa, r/f. Good size & balance, with deep brisket & ribbing extending well back. Powerful thighs & very good second thigh. Moved well in all directions. I note he is litter brother to winner of PG – what a good litter this must have been; 3 Shepherd’s Nattah In Sync with Oxana.
LIMIT (23,1) A disappointing class from the point of view that there was such a variety of type & quality that it was difficult to get a typey line-up. 1 Dillon’s Collooney Billy The Whizz, f/w trim. Lovely size, quality dog with deep brisket, overall well balanced & well developed thighs. Generally sound but would like to see a little more freedom & extension in profile movement; 2 Andrews’ Citycroft Rule The World at Charmus, fawn br/w trim. Larger mould than 1. Strong dog but without any coarseness. Good head & expression. Deep brisket, strong loin & good thighs. Moved well; 3 McConkey’s Barmoll Billy Elliott.
OPEN (16,3) 1 Poole’s Ch Demerlay Regal Renown at Brockfield, it is no secret that I have always like this dog. Last judged him 4 years ago when I seriously considered him for at least the RCC but at 18 months he was just not ready. At 5½ years he may be looking a little grey in the face but do not be fooled by that – he certainly did not disappoint in performance today. This dog is completely without exaggeration – which is probably why it took a while after his first CC (with RBIS at Houndshow) for him to achieve his title. So many people are fooled by flashy dogs with flashy movement – but flashy does not mean correct. He is in superb coat, skin & muscle condition. His layback of shoulder & return & length of upper arm are correct, giving him his super daisy cutting action, with the movement coming from the shoulder & not just from the elbow which produces the ‘goose stepping’ action which we see quite frequently. New comers to the breed should watch this dog & learn. He has a good topline, strong loin & hindquarters with enough bend of stifle to propel him along without any apparent effort. He moved like a dream once he got into his stride & made my day when I felt completely justified in awarding him the CC & RBIS; 2 Eades’ Ch Courthill Cast A Spell, br/w trim. A well balanced dog of ideal size. Masculine, well muscled. Good topline & angulation. Moved well, particularly in profile. Worthy ch; 3 Snelgrove’s Huntinghill Jazztastic.
