Dog Critique
Judge: Mrs Shirley Rawlings (Chyton)
I would like to thank the NWA who hosted the Joint Whippet Clubs Championship Show, for the invitation to judge and for the exhibitors who gave me such a super entry. Also my two stewards who worked hard to keep the ring running smoothly. I was looking for a dog of elegance and good breed type, capable of fulfilling his job of chasing his prey. I was pleased that the majority were presented in excellent condition. Most had very good coats, only a few with nails too long or dirty teeth. I was however struck with the prevalence of flat backs and many with prominent breast bones which spoils the clean line of the front and the elegant line of the neck.
Veteran Dog: lst and Best Veteran in Show Hannah Russell’s Ch Willingwisp Star Trooper. Red fawn and white, now ten years old but retaining his lovely outline and strong correct movement. Attractive, masculine head with well-set ear carriage, dark eye and pigment. Strong under jaw with good bite, nice length of neck, well ribbed back and depth of brisket. A worthy champion of the breed. 2nd Hughes and Jackson’s Penbriar Corruleam Star, Seven year old blue in excellent condition. Lovely length, good straight front with plenty of bone down to good feet. Good depth, strong quarters and moved out well. 3rd Wilkinson’s Ch Fletchgate Star Walker.
Minor Puppy Dog: lst and Best Dog Puppy Shepherd’s Citycroft Sundae With Oxana. Fawn with white trim. Well-shaped youngster with attractive head and expression. Neat ears, good length of neck into well-laid shoulder. Good depth of brisket and length of ribbing. Strong quarters with correct bend of stifle. Well-boned down to good feet. Just needs to develop a little more rise over the loin which should come with age. Moved very well. Should have a bright future. 2nd Clitheroe, Philo & Waugh’s Layways Northern Lights Over Coppershall. Elegant brindle, taller than winner but a very shapely dog who moved well and kept his topline on the move. Good front, depth of brisket. Straight front with bladed bone, well padded feet. Stood over his ground with ease. Hope he doesn’t grow on too much. 3rd James’ Drakesoak Rum Punch.
Puppy Dog: lst Ellis’s Railfield Lone Rainger. Well constructed fawn of nice size with attractive head. Good length of neck into well-laid shoulder and length of ribbing. Clean and well angulated front with good infill. Moved soundly and freely. 2nd Wood’s Ardencote High Class. Well marked fawn and white parti-colour. A nicely balanced puppy. A close decision between these two youngsters and the comments apply to both. I just preferred the more fluid movement of the winner. 3rd Smith’s Collooney Swing Time.
Junior Dog: lst and Res CC. Tope’s Falco ncrag Class Act for Dewertone. I liked this dog as soon as I put my hands on him. He really flows under your touch. Super head and nice expression. Neck of good length into well-laid shoulder. Good length of ribbing, strong loin and nicely angulated quarters. Moved very soundly coming and going and in profile. He is a lovely size and true whippet type. I shall watch his future with interest. 2nd Russell’s Palmik Depeche Mode. Brindle of quality and good breed type. Stood well over his ground. Strong neck, nice topline, good depth of brisket and well developed second thigh. Moved soundly with drive. 3rd Jones’s Jothryn Fly Away Boy.
Yearling Dog: lst Marston-Pollock & Glaholm’s Falconcrag Another Class. Litter brother to winner of Junior and similar in type and quality. Just that little bit stronger when it came to the challenge my preference was for the finer. Two super whippets of true breed type. The breeders can be proud of them both. 2nd Smith’s Rivarco Jack Daniels. Dark brindle of quality. Nice head proportions with neat ears. Strong body with plenty of depth. Well muscled quarters with low hocks. Moved with drive. 3rd Robertson’s Moonlake My Way.
Novice Dog: lst Shepherd’s Citycroft Sundae With Oxana. 2nd Richard’s Richclass Simply Magic. Nicely balanced of good type an quality. Moved out with reach and drive. 3rd Cartright’s Rearsbylea Moth Hawk.
Undergraduate Dog: lst Bowrey’s Cobyco Cause To Celebrate. lightly marked brindle with white trim. Strong dog with good bladed bone down to well padded feet. Good spring of rib and strong loin. A little flat in back on the move but moved with drive. 2nd Dennis-Smith Karadhras Cherubnek at Brynnsimeon. Cream of quality and nice breed type. Good head proportions, plenty of length of neck and depth of brisket with good rise over loin. Would like a stronger pastern but good bladed bone. Moved well and soundly. 3rd Leathart & Skelley’s Ringmore Dalyrimple.
Special Beginners: 1st Wilson’s Shalfleet Simply Jeeves. Very smart red brindle and white of correct size and with good head proportions. Dark eye and pigment. Elegant neck into good shoulder, correct front assembly. Well ribbed back with sweeping quarters. True movement. 2nd Price’s Elmanash Majestic Gold Among Silkdance. Fawn dog of good breed type. Good strong body with depth of brisket, nice rise over loin. In hard condition with nice sweep to quarters. Correct mover. 3rd Cartright’s Rearsbylea Moth Hawk.
Post Graduate Dog: lst Lawley’s Lawleymoon Time Will Tell. Attractive fawn with flowing lines. Good length of neck into well laid shoulder Correct front assembly with good infill. Nice topline, deep brisket and ribbing. Strong loin and correct bend of stifle. Low hocks. Moved with drive. 2nd Andrew’s Railfield Rainkey For Sharmus. Brindle with white trim. Nice outline when stacked, good length of neck into shoulder. Plenty of spring of rib and good underline. Strong loin and well muscled quarters. Move with long flowing stride. 3rd Perkins’ Dejare Would You Believe at Zeglynn.
Mid Limit Dog: One of those classes where you wanted more than five cards. 1st Scholes’ Craigavad Once In A Lifetime. Elegant silver brindle, a delight to handle with pleasing front, good shoulder placement into correct topline. Strong loin and quarters with low hocks. Good length of ribbing and spring of rib. In this class he moved with an easy long stride and was true coming and going, but he is not an easy dog to handle and was less positive when it came to the challenge at the end of the day. 2nd. Whitehead’s Ch Citycroft High Society. Fawn of quality I have admired from the ringside and does not disappoint when handled. Masculine head with strong neck into well-laid shoulder. Correct front assembly, strong loin and quarters. Good bone down to well-padded feet. Lovely outline when stacked and moves out with plenty of drive. A worthy champion. 3rd Anderson’s Becscott Oxford Pioneer.
Limit Dog: lst Glaholm & Marston-Pollock’s Rae Renowned At Gazenorth. Correct sized brindle with good head proportions, strong neck, good spring of rib and depth of brisket. Strong loin, good second thigh. Bladed bone down to well padded feet. Moved true coming and going with long free stride. 2nd Allen’s Zoraden Gingerbread Latte. Another of nice size, attractive shaded red colouring with dark mask. Well constructed throughout and very sound on the move. Well proportioned head with alert expression. Well sprung ribs with good topline, and depth of brisket. Strong quarters.with broad second thigh. Moved very well. 3rd Perkins Dejare Would You Believe At Zeglynn.
Open Dog: lst Johnston’s Ch Danluke Lord of the Dance. Super masculine head with lovely dark eye and expression. Nice strength and length of neck into well laid shoulder, good depth of brisket. Strong hind quarters with good angulation and low hocks. He is very sound both coming and going and powered around the ring. An impressive example of a strong male whippet. Dog CC, Res BIS and BOS. 2nd Smith’s Collooney Jayhawk. I have long admired this dog from the ringside. I know he is on the tall side but I can forgive him that as he is so very elegant and has such a lovely whippet outline. He has a super head, neck and shoulder with a good length of topline with a correct gentle rise over the loin. Plenty of depth of brisket and length of ribbing. A nicely balanced dog.He moved well behind and had a long free stride in profile. 3rd Smith’s Ch Courthill Crimson Shadow.

Judge: Pam Marston-Pollock (Falconcrag)
My thanks to NWA the host Club for their hospitality and to my two efficient stewards.
Since I last judged two years ago, I see a trend. Then I had no problem filling 5 places in each class,I hadn’t anticipated that change would come so quickly. Major faults which are now, it seems, the norm, in front construction, ribbing and bone quality. There is such a variation in body shape and movement with toplines starting in different places and a number lacked any muscle development at all. The Whippet is a sighthound and must retain those qualities to enable it to remain true in breed type.Strength is certainly not in numbers, every litter does not produce a show dog and I would ask those continuing to breed the Whippet to give careful consideration to preserving the characteristics of the breed.
MPB(24,5)
1.Yacoby Wright’s Cobyco Candy Crème,stunning fawn baby of quality.Stood alone in this big class for her strength of type and quality.Feminine head of good proportions, dark eye, ears still to settle but fine textured.Cleanest shoulder in the whole entry of bitches, elbows well tucked in.Correct shape of bone.Good reach of neck flowing topline into beautifully sweeping hindquarters.Moved soundly for her debut and later in the challenge for BPIS had settled well and the referee agreed she should be BPIS.Had she been older and more mature she would have troubled the top girls.
2.Home & Fisher Home’s Citycroft Crème Caramel of Jasarat, totally different type, more compact in her makeup.Feminine head of quality, not as clean in skull but has good dark eye, good strength of underjaw and good definition.Fine, neat ears, correct reach of neck, not as smooth over the shoulder of 1,but strong front of good width.Still needs to develop in brisket, but has good spring of rib.Strong, well muscled loin, flowing topline.Well angulated hindquarters with low hocks, moved soundly.Later was first in Novice.

2.Veenstra’s Shiny Sensation’s Rich and Famous, rangier type and immature in comparison to 1.Liked her type, feminine and elegant.Long reach of neck, not as well angulated in front but has strength of bone carried well down.Lovely body shape, broad loin.Slightly longer in second thigh which movement showed as her hind movement was not as strong going away, but was good in profile.
3.Wilton-Clark’s Shalfleet Maggie May.
JB(13,4)
1.Jackson’s Kerchilli Sweet Harmony, stood out for shape and construction.Strong type, shapely head with good skull and expression.Nicely shaped ears.Strong, well muscled neck, length in proportion to her balance.Well angulated front with good layback of shoulder and excellent return of upper arm, subsequently has good forechest and depth of brisket.Mature body, well sprung rib, strong topline.Well set hindquarters of good width and muscletone.Moved soundly would have liked her to be more positive in her attitude and sold herself more in the challenge.
2.Sykes’ Veredon Geeuz a Gander, liked her type which is totally different to 1.At a different stage of development and today lacked the furnishings to her brisket that 1 excelled in.Elegant, feminine, has presence. When she settled into herself she had a well angulated front, well boned and nice feet.Good ribbing and topline.Balanced hindquarters with low hocks.A useful sort can only improve with maturity.

1.McConkey’s Barmoll Bag O’ Tricks, feminine brindle, compact type, the soundest mover,so light on her feet.Whippety head, would like a slightly darker eye.Good reach of neck, strong curvy topline.Higher set and would like more furnishings on her brisket to give a more oval rib but overall nicely balanced and positive mover.
2.Chant’s Florancy First Footing, totally different in type and for me a bit overdone in depth, but a shapely bitch has good front construction. Not as positive in movement out and back but had good extension in profile.

2.Whitehead,Smith & Mixides’ Winter is Coming to Citycroft, feminine, shapely, typical balance.Would prefer more work in head and not such hard eye.Good reach of neck, good topline, not quite return of upper arm needed.Moved well and looked balanced throughout.

2.Home & Fisher Homes’ Citycroft My Fair Lady of Jasarat, different type but very similar in breed points.Typical head with good underjaw, neat ears.Well balanced, good rise over loin.Good foot shape.Didn’t use hqs as I would have expected, but a very nice girl.

2.Wilson & Morgan’s Shalfleet Amber Nectar at Meandi, another honestly made bitch of totally different type.Lovely head and eye.Strong correct reach of neck with good front angles.Well sprung rib, good body proprtions.Good bend of stifle, moved well, looked a little out of coat.

2.Bayley’s Whisterfield As If By Magic, totally different type and she appealed to me very much.Well proportioned with good reach of neck and forechest.Good bone of correct type.Mature body with good spring of rib and depth of brisket.Flowing topline, balanced hqs,Moved truly, just not as feminine as 1.

2.Yacoby-Wright’s Ch.Tylko Cobyco Paranoia,I’ve been dying to get my hands on this bitch and I was not disappointed. She has the great combination of true Whippet type, elegance and substance.Quality head with good reach of neck and forechest and mature body. She is shapely and has a lovely turn of stifle.Moved soundly with good extension, just pulled back on herself when stacked which spoilt her balance.Res.CC.

1.Mycroft’s Shiny Sensations Spirit of Love For Supeta,Loved her type and femininity.Whippety head with dark eye and good depth of chin.Well arched neck into good front angulation and forechest.Mature body with well sprung rib and width of loin.Lovely sweep of hq,could do with a little more muscletone.Unusual markings detracted from straight to and fro movement but extended nicely in profile.Pushed hard for ResCC.

1.Morris,Waddell & Donaldson’s Ch.Nothing Compares to You at Crosscrop,There are few who understand the hard work it takes to maintain a top winner throughout a showing year and there are times where this bitch has not been as I would like her to perform but today she was bang on form.Classic fawn, compact, showing complete balance without exaggeration.Quality bone, well angulated hqs, flowing from nose to tail. For perfection I would like a little more work in head but she is feminine and today had a crisp outline and moved soundly, her handler on this occasion showed her steadily to great advantage.CC & BIS.
